Biotechnology currently function as a joint Department since summer of 2015. The discipline of Biotechnology started admitting student in 2014-2015 in 4 years B.Tech in Biotechnology. A total of 7 students got admitted in the 2014-2015 session , 22 students in the 2015-2016 session, 10 students in the 2016-2017 session and 10 students in the 2017-2018 session. The department aims to provide latest state-of-art education, research and innovation in areas of Biotechnology. In general for the country as a whole, and in particular for the North Eastern region full with bio-diversity, bio-resources, bio-medicinal plants etc., the offer of courses in Biotechnology with specialization in bio-medicine, food processing, preservation etc., are decisively befitting for this Institute of National Importance.
The major thrust of biotechnology includes infectious diseases, clinical and health Research, proteomics, biochemical engineering, tissue engineering, drug discovery, nutritional biochemistry, bio-medicinal plants computational biology and cancer biology. The department has recently initiated efforts to establish advanced research laboratories in all the thrust areas under a center for excellence funded by MHRD. Initiative has been taken to invite industrial professionals to interact with students thereby allowing them to understand the challenges and requirements related to industries.
